One line that seemed worth saving is, "The trail map is meant to be lived into. Filled in with the colors of a life lived."
The prompt suggesting a list of surprises terrified me, so I left that one for another time.

I’m an independent journalist living in Washington State. I was awestruck by your memoir: "What Looks Like Bravery.” I’m working on a memoir of my own. I was traumatized in childhood by sexual abuse by a priest. Your story have me insight into my own story. My response to trauma was also to hide my feelings if I was so unfortunate as to have them. My goal in writing the memoir is to let people know that even given horrible traumas, people can recover with practices like EMDR and other psychological tools.
I’m a newbie writer on Substack (even though I have 35 years experience writing) and I’m writing about your book and how much it touched me. I would love to talk with you about the book. Are you available for a phone interview? I think it would take 30 minutes of your time which I realize is valuable. Just read What Looks Like Bravery and fell in love with it--the donkeys, the doves, the beavers, and the sundry other beautifully tattered beings brought to life in those pages.
